How to Fill and Drain a Floor Scrubber
A task-first procedure for filling solution tanks, handling recovered water, preventing cross-contamination and closing out a floor-scrubbing route safely.
Use only the fill point, water temperature, detergent and dilution permitted by the machine and chemical manufacturers. Start with an empty recovery tank, measure concentrate instead of guessing, and never confuse the solution and recovery openings. At the end of the route, move to an approved disposal area, power the machine down, empty the recovery tank through its drain hose, rinse away residue, and leave tanks vented only as the manual directs.
Identify both tanks before handling liquid
Automatic scrubbers normally carry clean solution in one tank and collect dirty water in another. Their caps, hoses and filters vary by model, so locate each component in the operator manual before opening anything. A recovery-tank opening is not an alternate fill port. Putting detergent or clean water into the wrong space can contaminate the vacuum path, create foam or send debris back through a system that was designed only to collect it.
Inspect the machine before filling. Confirm that the recovery tank is empty, its drain hose and cap are secured, the float and accessible screen are clean, and no old chemical remains in the solution system. Check the floor-care product label, safety data sheet and machine guidance together. The detergent must suit the floor, the soil and an automatic scrubber; a pleasant scent or familiar household label does not establish compatibility.
Fill without guessing at concentration
Park on a level surface near the approved water source, switch the machine off and use required protective equipment. Follow the model-specific order for adding water and concentrate. Some procedures add water first to reduce foaming; dispensing or onboard dilution systems may use a different sequence. Use the specified water temperature because excessively hot water can affect tanks, seals or chemical behavior. Keep the hose clean and do not let its end rest in contaminated water.
Measure the tank volume actually being prepared, then apply the product label's dilution for the task. A partly filled tank needs a partly sized dose. Use a dedicated measuring device or calibrated dispenser rather than the bottle cap unless that cap is explicitly graduated. More concentrate can create residue, foam, slip concerns and extra rinse work. Secure the fill cap, wipe spills promptly and record the product when multiple chemicals are used at the facility.
Drain recovered water in a controlled location
Stop before the recovery tank overfills or its float closes the vacuum path. Travel to a disposal point approved by the facility and local requirements; outdoor storm drains are not interchangeable with sanitary drains. Lower the drain hose carefully, keep its end controlled, and open the cap or valve gradually so dirty water does not splash. Wear the protection required for the recovered soil and detergent, not merely what is convenient for clean tap water.
If the route involved oil, regulated material, bodily fluids or an unknown spill, ordinary drain disposal may be inappropriate. Isolate the machine and follow the site's waste procedure. A floor scrubber does not change the legal or safety status of what it picked up. Never reach into dirty water to clear an obstruction while the machine is energized. Use only the cleaning and blockage-removal method assigned by the manual.
Rinse, inspect and store for the next shift
Rinse the recovery tank with clean water, directing residue toward the drain without spraying protected electrical or vacuum components. Clean the float shutoff, screens, lid gasket and drain hose that the manual identifies as operator-serviceable. Drain or retain solution only as allowed for that chemical and model. Leaving mixed product for an extended period can separate, form deposits or expose seals to chemistry longer than intended.
Clean the squeegee and brush or pad, look for leakage beneath the machine, and report damaged caps, hoses or tank seals. Store the unit securely on a level surface. Many machines are stored with the recovery lid open enough to ventilate, but the exact position is manufacturer-dependent. A written closeout record helps the next operator know whether the scrubber is clean, charged, empty and ready rather than discovering yesterday's recovery water at startup.
