Floor Scrubber Safety Checklist
A pre-use, operating and shutdown checklist for commercial scrubber routes.
Control the route before starting: trained operator, readable manual, inspected machine, compatible chemistry, clear floor, wet-floor controls and a planned fill/drain/charge process. Stop when safety devices, power components or recovery fail.
Operator and route readiness
Only trained staff should operate the machine. Review emergency stop, controls, braking, turning, slope limits and the procedure for disconnecting power.
Separate pedestrians from wet work with barriers and scheduling. Mark transitions, ramps, blind corners and loading areas before the route begins.
Machine inspection
Look for damaged cords, plugs, battery connectors, hoses, lids, blades, guards, wheels and pad or brush attachment. Confirm that required safety devices work.
Leaks, unusual odors, heat, damaged wiring or missing guards require removal from service and qualified evaluation.
Chemical control
Read the product label and SDS. Wear specified personal protection, use the labeled dilution and maintain ventilation.
Never mix products unless the labels explicitly direct it. Keep chemicals in labeled containers and train staff on spill response.
During and after use
Travel at a controlled speed, slow before turns and keep the full squeegee path clear of people and fixtures. Do not exceed documented slopes.
Drain only to approved locations. Clean the machine without directing water into electrical components, then charge and store as specified.
Control the Area Before Starting
A scrubber creates a moving work zone with wet flooring, limited sightlines and, on larger machines, meaningful mass. Remove loose debris, cords and obstacles before lowering the cleaning head. Place wet-floor signs where people can see them before entering the route, and plan the job so the operator is not backing blindly through doors, intersections or customer traffic.
Confirm that the floor and slope are within the machine maker’s permitted uses. Pay particular attention to ramps, loading areas, elevator capacities, drop-offs and transitions between surfaces. A ride-on machine should never be treated like a cart for passengers or materials unless the manufacturer explicitly designed it for that purpose.
Inspect the Machine and Cleaning Solution
Before each shift, check the squeegee assembly, pad or brush, guards, wheels, hoses, tank lids and visible wiring. Battery machines also need a look for damaged connectors, abnormal heat, leakage or corrosion; corded machines need a full cord and plug inspection. If a safety device is missing or a fault affects steering, braking, power control or water pickup, remove the machine from service.
Use only a cleaner compatible with the machine and floor finish. Read the product label and safety data sheet, wear the specified protective equipment and measure the dilution rather than estimating it. Never mix cleaners. A product described as a floor cleaner is not automatically a disinfectant, and a scrubber pass does not replace the label’s required application method or contact time.
Operate, Empty and Charge Deliberately
Use a speed that preserves control and gives the squeegee time to recover solution. Slow down before turns, keep hands and feet away from the cleaning head, and stop before adjusting a pad, brush, hose or blade. If the floor remains wet, block the area and correct the pickup problem rather than repeatedly driving over it.
Empty tanks only at an approved disposal point and follow local rules for the recovered solution. Ventilate the charging area and follow the battery and charger instructions for connection order, inspection and maintenance. Secure the machine against unintended movement, leave the tanks and lids as the manual directs, and record defects so the next operator does not inherit an unsafe machine.
A final control worth documenting
Keep emergency contacts and the equipment reporting process visible at the storage area. A checklist should name who may clear a minor obstruction, who may service electrical or battery faults, and where an unsafe machine is parked. Clear escalation prevents a well-meaning operator from improvising a repair during a busy shift.

Does a scrubber eliminate wet-floor signs?
No. Recovery reduces water but does not guarantee an immediately dry, slip-free surface.
Can anyone operate a ride-on scrubber?
Facilities should authorize and train operators for the exact equipment and work environment.
What defects require stopping?
Electrical damage, leaks, failed controls, missing guards, overheating or unsafe recovery are clear stop conditions.
